This is Freddie from Bauton Milling
My friends call me Bau or Bauton, which is a simplified version of my last name, Boughton.
I've been making ceramics since 2023, ever since my previous business, a solar panel installation company, went under after the effects of the pandemic. It was hard seeing 8 years of hard work go down the drain.
I had worked a couple of corporate jobs before that, but i didn't feel like going back to the corporate world. I decided I was going to take a few months before making a new career decision.
I come from an engineering background, and creating something out of nothing had always been a big interest of mine. Started making decorations out of wood with a CNC Router machine, then after watching a video of a process called slip casting. I decided to try it out. Made a plaster block and used the router machine to shape it into a mold, and cast my first ceramic piece.
I didn't know anything about glazing or firing, didn't even own a kiln. Bought the smallest and least expensive one I could find and suddenly I was in a journey.
Started learning the ins and outs of the ceramic world. Mold making, design, glazing, firing, and all the issues and challenges that came with it.
I was hooked, kept on improving my skills and the things I created started to look better and better, which led me to my first couple of sales.
Join me in this adventure that's still in its early beginnings. I'll keep challenging myself to come up with better and more interesting designs that you all can enjoy!
